Leptorhynchos sp. in Black Hill, Morialta and Horsnell Gully Conservation ParksCOMPOSITAE
Leptorhynchos squamatus Morialta CP, 8 November 2008 Leptorhynchos
Tbe name Leptorhynchos is made from two Greek words; Leptos meaning slender and rhynchos meaning snout. A reference to the beaked seed of some species. There are about 10 species of Leptorhynchos, all endemic to Australia. We have just Leptorhynchos squamatus in our Parks.
Leptorhynchos squamatus
Not surprisingly, squamatus means, with scales. This small daisy-like plant can be seen flowering along the sides of the Banksia Trail in Morialta in November.
Leptorhynchos squamatus Morialta CP, 8 November 2008 These are small perenial plants, growing to about 40cm tall. The flowers are about 1.5cm across, and are bright golden-yellow. You can see from the photo on this page, the flowers are held on quite long stems which have scaly leaflets on them. This species is also found in Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.
